About University of South Wales

The University of South Wales (USW) is one of the pioneering universities in the UK, offering excellent opportunities for students. It was shortlisted in the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2017 for its outstanding career-focused approach. Students who graduate from the institution find themselves employed soon after completing their studies, in fact, 95 percent of its students are in further study or employment within six months of graduating (DLHE 2018).

The satisfaction amongst students who study at the university is very high, with subjects like civil engineering at USW being rated top in Wales for student satisfaction for the third year running (National Student Survey, 2021).

Students at USW can choose from over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The university’s strong partnerships with global companies like IBM, Rolls-Royce, HSBC and the BBC serve students a great deal, helping them connect with potential employers.

USW is well known for its sports and film courses and has produced many award-winning sports teams and filmmakers. The top of the range facilities at USW Sport Park are some of the best in the UK, and are used by numerous professional clubs. USW is the only university in England and Wales to offer a full-size indoor 3G pitch built to FIFA Pro and World Rugby Standard that guarantees training all year round.

Attracting GBP 23.2 million worth of investment into Wales, the USW Students’ Union plays an active role in each student’s life allowing them to be part of a varied social and cultural community, as well as take their academic endeavours to a higher level.

International students at USW can easily network with people and faculty using the available support services. USW Careers offers one-to-one guidance to students, helping them in their professional and academic space.

Graduate outcomes

The university has an excellent graduate employment rate 95 percent of USW students are in full-time employment or further study within six months of graduating (DLHE 2018).

Students are also encouraged and assisted with finding work placements. This complements the practical education provided on campus and provides opportunities to put classroom skills into practice.

Courses at USW are designed alongside industry professionals and taught by leading academics. This ensures graduates are fully equipped with the relevant knowledge and practical skills required to be successful in their chosen career.

The university also offers sandwich courses, where students spend up to a year in paid, full-time work, achieving credits that will go towards their qualification.

Environmental initiatives

In a new strategy, USW has outlined its plans to become carbon neutral by 2040 and has introduced a range of initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint.

The institution has already started implementing changes, including adding LED lights and solar panels on campus and switching to biodegradable packaging in its catering facilities and has reduced its carbon emissions by 27 percent since 2018/19.

Popular programmes

The BSc/MSc Cyber Security has helped university has become the only Welsh institution to be named an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education and has been named cyber security university of the year for four years running from 2019-2022.

The MBA Global is a two-year postgraduate programme that is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute. With a scholarship worth up to GBP 2,500, the programme is a unique MBA, that offers students the opportunity to apply for a placement with a local company, within the USW Business Clinic or an entrepreneurship-based placement to gain up to 8 months of invaluable work experience in the UK.

The MSc Public Health qualification creates professionals who can lead and implement change in public health across the world stage. An increasingly popular course since the pandemic, this public health master’s recognises that health challenges can be more global than a single country’s population, and that local policy and regulation responses will vary from country to country.
